About Lace Necklaces

Published on May 2, 2024

These dainty little things started with a dress and some pearle cotton, a few failures, cursing (not enough that would make a nun blush though) and some jewelry making supplies and a revelation.

I wanted to make a collar to go with a dress I had just sewn, but my effort wasn’t enough to bring my idea into reality. There wasn’t enough cotton thread, the button placket of the dress didn’t want to cooperate with a peter pan collar look, the colors in their designs didn’t compliment each other…I mean, I could have stopped with “there wasn’t enough cotton thread” but I was stubborn about this.

After the struggles had mostly subsided, I stood in front of my mirror and draped the lace across my neck. That’s when I didn’t see a collar, I saw a necklace. That shift in perspective may have been because I was wearing a t-shirt proclaiming my love of coffee — I don’t know that for sure, but it’s not a long shot statistically.

Enter the name: Daffodil.

Enter ideas for so many other necklaces. I made a list, then I couldn’t find that list and made another list, then I found the first list and couldn’t find the second one (hello ADHD symptoms, how nice to see you…could you come back later though?)

As to the design process, Snapdragon came next. I saw exactly how I’d evoke the open mouth and that frilled, fringy “chin” and I was off to the races!
